“Marilu” by Serge Gainsbourg [1966]
Random Music History Song of the Day
Serge Gainsbourg was arguably the dominant French songwriter from 1964 to about 1972. Everything he wrote, whether for yé-yé girls or for himself, was catchy as hell. “Marilu,” a single and EP track from 1966 (and which later appeared on the monumental 1968 compilation LP Initials B.B.), was no exception. I don’t speak French, so the lyrics are mostly lost on me (any French speakers want to enlighten us?), but I don’t get the impression that in this case the words were too dirty. Then again, this was the same Serge Gainsbourg who wrote “Les Sucettes” for an innocent France Gall later that year and who would go on to write the infamous “Je T’aime…Moi Non Plus.”
You don’t need to speak the same language to pick out a well-written song. Enjoy!
